Here he is. The finished project. In the darkest spots I used charcoal but everything else was done with my handy-dandy mechanical pencil. He smells nice too! (I had to spray him with hair spray so the charcoal wouldn't all rub off)

I love this man. I don't know who he is, but I love him. Most of all I love his face. This is the face that changed my opinion about wrinkles. I love them! I can't wait to get them! They give a face character and it's so much more fun to draw a face full of wrinkles and laugh lines than a smooth super model. If you draw one of each and set them next to each other, which one do you think that people are going to love? The most beautiful one, of course! The one full of wrinkles!

He's a WIP, I really need to get back to work on him. Actually, I think I'll go do that right about...now.

Everybody, meet The Walrus Man. Every time I look at this picture I shake my head, not because I did such a bad job but because this is really what the man looked like. Like a walrus.

Pet Drawing #33

I've been pretty busy for the past few week. One week, I was working on a commission piece for my work and then the next week, I prepared a sermon for my church last Sunday. The sermon included an object lesson where I printed out a linocut design. Fun!

I'm still going to be rather busy. On top of looking for extra work, I have decided to work on updating my illustration portfolio. So I probably won't put out as many pet drawings as when I first started. But that's really not the point. I look forward to my pet drawings as creating art for my own personal enjoyment.

My cat Mr. Frodo was drawn from memory with a 0.9mm mechanical pencil. This drawing is a study for my portfolio.

Today I drew our other dog. He is very clingy and needy. He has some health problems too and he isn't very old. My son is very attached to him as you can see.

I haven't had time to draw in two weeks. I think this was especially hard because of my absence. I have been working on another project and now that it is done I can return to my life. Hoping to get to drawing (and other things like dishes) on a regular basis now.

Pet Drawings 25 - 32

Had some down time today after church so I took the opportunity to draw the pets. With the warmer temperatures today, they pretty much lounged around all day. Ruby was the most restless. I think that is why I drew her the most, because I kept trying to get a good drawing of her.

Self-Portrait #3 of 100

I very nearly forgot to the results of my 3rd self-portrait here. I thought it would be difficult to do a standing one, but it turns out that it wasn't difficult for the reason I thought it would be. I thought I would be unsteady, and I really had no problems with that at all. My problem was holding my sketchbook for the time it took to sketch. This was done in five minutes, and it's a good thing, because I was beginning to get shaky!

Pet Drawings #23, 24

The first drawing is of Samantha as she was sitting on my leg. Good thing my sketchbook was sitting right next to me so I could pick it up and draw her. Done with a Bic 0.7mm mechanical pencil.The second drawing is of Mr. Frodo sitting on our junk mail. It is funny how cats like to sit on things like that. Drawn with a 0.9mm mechanical pencil.Being at just under 25 drawings of my planned 100, I feel like I am starting to run out of ideas. This is the point where I need to not think about drawing 100 pictures, but to think about simply enjoying the process of observing my subjects and being creative. That's what this is about, right?

I feel so behind already! Here, David Vellejo is almost a quarter of the way through, and I'm only one-fiftieth. Whoo! Anyway, I can blame part of it on my need for a haircut before spending too much time in front of the mirror!

Pet Drawings #18, 19, 20, 21, 22

Haven't had enough time to post lately, but I still have been drawing. Sometimes time limits dictate what techniques I use for my drawings. Since I had a lot going on this week I decided to work mostly with line and some gesture. I like using a variety of techniques because there is always something to learn with how different approaches to drawing have me see my subjects. I sometimes envy artists whose sketchbooks have a pretty drawing on every page. Their books are a work of art in themselves. Not mine! My books send to be a place where I experiment with ideas and process, while occasionally creating something that I might want to frame and hang on a wall. However, I have come to appreciate looking at "process" drawings in my sketchbooks, as well as other artists' works. Some of these dog sketches remind me of one of my favorite children's books "A Day, A Dog" by Gabrielle Vincent. In this book, Vincent tells a pictorial story of a dog that is abandoned and travels through a meandering path. Vincent tell the story with "simple" drawings that could have easily come from her sketchbook. Yet the simplicity of the drawings have an effective impact on how the story is told. A more refined technique would have probably been a distraction to the story. The book not only represents a dog tale, but also the joy of drawing and creating.

My sketchbook is a small (A6) Canson sketchbook and I mostly work with watersoluble Stabilo All and Tombow markers.
